Melbourne Shakespeare Company was founded in 2016 by native Brit and Aussie by choice,  Jennifer Sarah Dean. The company quickly gained success with our debut production described by one reviewer as 'a monolith of the independent theatre scene'.  Since then Melbourne Shakespeare Company have gone from strength to strength being recognised both in Australia and  internationally for our contemporary adaptations, charismatic performances and beautiful choreography.

Melbourne Shakespeare Company are committed to making Shakespeare accessible to everyone through our performances, radio plays, workshops and seminars.

Who are Melbourne Shakespeare Company?

Our productions are ensemble based and have a strong focus on precision in text, movement and music. We are privileged to work with some of Australia's most experienced and talented performers as well as emerging artists.

Melbourne Shakespeare Company holds open auditions twice a year, giving performers of all abilities and experience the chance to work with us. We also run educational workshops for emerging creatives to learn from Melbourne's best Shakespearean directors.

In 2019 Melbourne Shakespeare Company committed to trying to become one of Australia's first sustainable theatre companies. We use recycled, reclaimed and reused materials for our props and sets, and try to employ sustainable practises throughout all of our rehearsal and performances.

In 2021 Melbourne Shakespeare Company produced their first ever indoor production under the Melbourne Shakespeare Studio brand. Melbourne Shakespeare Studio is a new project developed to give emerging female directors and creators the opportunity to work with classical text.  Unlike Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s main stage summer productions Melbourne Shakespeare Studio productions will explore some of the darker works in Shakespeare's repotoire.

Development and Sustainability

In 2019 we were featured on ABC News for being one of Australia’s leading theatre companies in developing sustainable and environmentally considered theatre practises and we continue to strive to be leaders in this field.
