Rob Sowinski
Rob lives and works on the lands of the Yalukit-willam of the Kulin Nation and pays respects to the traditional custodians of these ancestral lands, and to Elders – past and present - who were the first image and sound makers here, and continue to have an enormously rich artistic heritage that is to be cherished and celebrated.
Rob‘s recent work includes The Lucky Country, Colour and Light- The Art of Sondheim for Watch This, 1988 for Australian Art Orchestra and Jane Clifton’s A Day at a Time in Rhyme. Lighting for concerts include Aki Onda and William Basinski at The Substation. Opera design includes Melbourne Opera’s Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, culminating in the 2023 Ring Cycle. Other operas include Macbeth and The Flying Dutchman; Lyric’s Iphigénie en Tauride, and The Coronation of Poppea.
Rob’s nine Green Room award nominations include Die Walküre, Macbeth and Flying Dutchman (MO), Triangle (MKA), Pacific Overtures and A Little Night Music (Watch This), and The Trouble with Harry (MKA/Melbourne Festival), with Colour and Light winning Best Design (Set and Lighting) in 2025
Rob has undertaken touring production lighting design and management for Macy Gray, Lorna Luft, Liza Minelli, John Cameron Mitchell, Marina Prior, Helen Reddy, Chita Rivera, Melanie Safka, and Ben Vereen.
