David Stewart

David Stewart is a performance maker, sound designer and educator who focuses on the spaces and work created between artists in multi-disciplinary collaboration. A graduate from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) studying Performance Making, Stewart has been composing, designing and performing for over a decade. He is a founding member of Undercurrent Theatre Company and works in a freelance capacity on many independent performances. In his time away from the theatre, Stewart is a musician who writes, performs and records his own music under Buckland. This background has allowed him to see where different art forms intersect while also giving him a vocabulary to communicate with artists from different backgrounds, fostering collaboration where it may not usually be encouraged. Recently, Stewart has composed for Melbourne Shakespeare Company (MSC)’s Cleopatra and Antony, Parkin Project’s The Genesis Project and Asha Cornelia Cluer’s A Magical Guide to Fighting Fascism. He was a participant of PVI Collective’s KISS Club in 2022, broadening the scope of his musical project Buckland into performance art and later the radio show Buckland: Broadcast to Space. Stewart now also works as a lecturer at WAAPA, teaching performance makers contemporary sound design and technical skills.
